How often do you open your wardrobe with a sigh, rummage around and then pick out the same old
pair of black trousers? You’re not alone. The studies show that the average woman wears 20% of
her clothes 80% of the time. So why keep all the clothes that you no longer wear, the expensive
mistakes you’ve never worn, tatty clothes you once loved and “thin” clothes for when you lose
weight?
Imagine how great it would be if the next time you look in your wardrobe, you see only clothes
you feel great in. Here are some tips to help you on your way through the two simple stages –
decluttering and reorganizing. Keep in mind that you are trying to transform your wardrobe so
it reflects who you are today.
Declutter
-
1. First of all take everything out of your wardrobe, all the hangers, shoes and
miscellaneous junk you keep in there. Absolutely everything! You may be amazed at what you
find lurking in there. Put all the non clothes stuff to one side for the moment.
-
2. Now give your wardrobe a thorough clean out – vacuum it and clean the clothes rail.
Get some bin liners- mark one charity, one action, and one recycling. Old
textiles and shoes can be recycled into something new.
-
3. Now put on some upbeat music and you’re ready to go. Pick up each item of clothing
individually and ask yourself these questions.
-
Have I worn it in the last year?
-
Do I feel good in it?
-
If the answer to either of these is no then why are you keeping it? Say it is an expensive pair
of pink shoes you only wore once and hated. Why keep them and feel guilty every time you look
at them? Let them go and dump the guilt. Someone else will love them. You could give them to
a friend, sell them at a secondhand/ designer shop or give them to charity.
Clothes that are too small My clients often hold onto clothes for “when they lose weight”
My advice is to let them go so you won’t feel bad every time you open your wardrobe. If you
can’t bear to do that, store them away for 6 months. Write the date on the bag and if you
haven’t lost the weight by then, give them away.
Sentimental items such as wedding dresses or an oufit you wore on your 21st birthday are a
special category. Be sentimental but selective. Keep only the best and find a place to store
them, not in your wardrobe.
Seasonal clothes. Ideally you would just have clothes you are currently wearing in your
wardrobe so store away summer clothes when autumn starts.
Reorganize
So now you have only clothes you love and match the season, how do you organize them? There are
no absolute rules for this, it depends on your lifestyle but here are some guidelines. You will
definitely reap the rewards by saving time every morning when you get dressed.
-
4. Hangers – Discard any wire ones - they aren’t good for your clothes. Ideally treat
yourself to matching wooden hangers, or if you prefer plastic ones. Padded hangers are great
for more delicate items. Put all hangers facing the same way in your wardrobe. Clothes just
hang better that way.
-
5. Moths. Use cedarwood balls both in your wardrobe and in stored clothes to keep away the
moths. They smell lovely, not at all like old fashioned moth balls.
-
6. Now is the time to sort out any clothes that need attention such as drycleaning or
mending. Put them in the action bag, make a note of what needs doing and aim to do it within a
week.
-
7. Now sort your clothes into categories such as trousers, shirts, dresses, skirts and
hang them together. Colour code them as you hang them back up grouping all white shirts
together, all patterned ones and all dark ones. It works to hang all long items at the side of
the wardrobe leaving a space under the short items for a shoe rack.
-
8. Don’t forget all the non clothes junk you took out of your wardrobe – decide what to
keep and then find it a new home. Wardrobes really are for clothes not kids toys, books and
broken gadgets.
-
9. Fantastic! Now you have streamlined and transformed your wardrobe. Enjoy the lighter
feeling you get when you look at it. Next time you indulge in a little retail therapy you’ll
have a much clearer idea of what clothes you own and where the gaps in your wardrobe are.
-
10. If you find all this a bit daunting and live in the London area Sue Kay from no more
clutter can help you. It usually takes a couple of hours to re-organize a client’s wardrobe.
Sue has a nonbullying, practical and sympathetic approach to re-organizing your wardrobe.
One client said it was “like letting go of 20 years in 2 hours”.
