    A death in the family, even when expected, is a traumatic event and arranging the funeral can be daunting.
    I founded Green Endings because I believe in advising, enabling and encouraging clients to make the choices that they feel most comfortable with at every stage.
    We advise on a wide range of options available and we offer opportunities for our clients to participate and be involved in all aspects of the process. A 'good' funeral is an extraordinarily profound event, it marks one of the most meaningful transitions of all. We want to ensure that it reflects and celebrates the sensibilities, lifestyle and beliefs of all those involved.
    Initial arrangements
    It can be a challenge for family and friends to co-ordinate a meeting to make the initial arrangements. We want people to feel as relaxed and in control as possible. This might mean visiting you at home, or alternatively our bright and welcoming premises in North West London are located conveniently for parking and public transport.
    Alternative and green funerals
    People are generally unaware that there are very few rules about what should or shouldn't happen at a funeral. There is no requirement to have a minister of religion present or to transport the coffin in a black hearse. You could be cremated or buried in your own garden, a local cemetery or in a woodland burial site. Coffins could be traditional or not and there are at least seven biodegradable options, cardboard coffins as well as wicker, bamboo or papier mache, from which to choose.

    The company is called The Lifestory Company and we're based in South Wales. We write people's lifestories for them - from researching and interviews to writing and hardback publishing. But we won't be selling our clients' published lifestories in the bookshops - only five books will be published for each client, and they are intended as a priceless family heirloom for them. Writing someone's lifestory for them is a lot of work - all in all it costs £3,000.

    But there are a number of do-it-yourself options that we have developed to suit all pockets so people can produce a comprehensive lifestory of their own. Our Writing Kit takes you step-by-step through the process - meaning you don't have all those daunting blank pages to fill. It's all done in manageable, enjoyable sections, and comes with a personalised binder to keep it all safe.

    Our writing kit costs £69 - normally there is a charge for postage and packing on top of this, but p+p is free until 30.3.03 as a mother's day promotion.

    I am a writer, and will be writing lifestories for people in South Wales, but as the company grows, we hope to recruit lifestory writers all over the country. We see it as a great way of bringing families together to discuss old memories as they work through the kit. It's also got some amazing health benefits, including improving the immune system and lowering blood pressure (according to a study at the University of Texas), and so is a perfect way to keep minds active.

    We're aiming to continue the tradition of women passing down the old stories and family folklore to their daughters - I think it'll really catch on in this country (it's already big in America).

    Catfish Multimedia have been in business since October 2000. Run by 2 women, Jane Horwood (web designer) and Maureen Purbrook (copywriter). Their target market is the not-for-profit sector and small businesses. On the charity side, they have done websites for the Joint Council for the Welfare of Immigrants, Naz Project London, The Brandon Centre and, most recently, The British Society of Rheumatology. All these can be found on the catfish site.

    On the small business front Catfish have found that their services were appealing to women and increasingly these are becoming their main clients. Catfish have recently completed sites for the North London Clinic, an online art gallery, journalist, de-clutter and de-junking company (all women). They are working on sites for Thai Yoga Massage school, Tower Hamlets carers centre and a jewellers in Old Bond Street (again, all women).

    What sets the company apart from a lot of web design agencies is the fact that they are willing to spend quite a bit of time discussing the client's business and finding out exactly what they want to achieve with their website. This applies however small the site is. Catfish don't see any need to confound the client with technical terms and programming language that they cannot understand and are not interested in. A lot of people are still wary of the web, don't really know what it can do and feel that they are going to be 'ripped off' because they don't understand the technicalities. It's like having a good garage mechanic, you may not know what's under the bonnet of the car, but you just want to trust someone who will fix what needs to be fixed and not charge a fortune for work you don't require.

    Catfish have excellent working relationships with their clients. They all know they can ring or email and get an immediate response. They are all willing to provide references.

    Cost: This varies tremendously depending very much on what people need. Catfish don't offer standard packages. A basic site with about 5 pages would cost approx £500 plus hosting (which we can also arrange if necessary). The cheapest hosting option is £60 a year which also includes the purchase of the domain name. If people want forms, secure sites for credit card information passwords, bulletin boards etc, then this bumps the price up. Prices range from £500 to £5,000.

    Other services: Most of the sites are very basic because these are the sorts of budgets we are working with. However, there are sites hosted on a secure server because they handle credit cards.
